Special Restricted Driver License After DUI
  |   Dec 03, 2018  |  Alcohol Offenses , DUI , DUI Penalties

If you are arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol or drugs in Arizona, you will lose your driver license on the spot. Additionally, you may be required to complete drug or alcohol screening before you can obtain a Special Restricted Driver License. What is a Special Restricted Driver License and what are the limitations? Before we dig deeper, we want to point out how a DUI conviction is not cheap. A first DUI offense involves a minimum fine of $1,250. It also requires the installation of an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) at the DUI defendant’s own expense. Lastly, after a DUI, insurance premiums skyrocket. In light of the above, DUI defendants need to continue working so they can afford all of these costs. A restricted driver license does just that. It allows DUI defendants to drive to and from work so they can earn the money to pay all of the costs associated with a DUI conviction, not to mention their living expenses.

Who is Eligible for a Restricted License?

Not everyone is eligible for a restricted driver license after a DUI conviction. For example, if your license is suspended or facing suspension for having too many moving violations, or for child support arrears, then you won’t be eligible for a restricted license. You may be eligible for a restricted license if:

  • With the exception of the DUI, your driver license is otherwise in good standing.
  • You installed an Ignition Interlock Device (IID).
  • You successfully completed any mandatory alcohol treatment program.
  • You submitted proof of an SR22, financial responsibility certificate.
  • You pay all applicable fees.

Generally, a restricted driver license allows a DUI defendant to drive for specific business, employment and school purposes during their license suspension or revocation period. It may also allow a parent to drive his or her dependents to work, school, or a medical appointment (effective 12/31/2018). Related: 8 Alcohol Offenses You Didn’t Know About in Arizona
