Arizona CPS Worker Arrested on Heroin Charges

Thursday, February 20, Phoenix police officers who were conducting a sting arrested a Child Protective Services worker for allegedly trying to purchase heroin. According to one sergeant, the department had gotten a tip about this 35-year-old CPS worker. They said she pulled up in a government car and bought $200 of fake heroin from undercover Phoenix officers. When she was arrested, she said that she was investigating a client for CPS. She was booked for attempted possession of a narcotic drug. She has no prior criminal record, and she was released from custody without having to pay bond. She is being investigated by Phoenix police and by CPS internal affairs.

Penalties for Possessing Heroin in Arizona

While a charge of even attempted drug possession is a serious matter, narcotic drug charges are particularly severe. If someone is charged with possession of heroin in Phoenix, they are probably being charged with a Class 4 felony. This could be punishable by:

  • Six months to 2 years in prison and
  • Either up to $1,000 in fines OR
  • As much as 3 times the substance’s worth, whichever is the higher fine

For someone who does not have a prior felony record, however, they could get this charge lowered to a Class 1 misdemeanor charge instead. The penalties for this type of conviction could mean:

  • Up to 6 months in jail
  • Up to $2,500 in fines

Regardless of the months or years that you could be sentenced to jail or prison, a conviction would brand you as a convicted criminal, a destroyed reputation that could end up ruining any attempts to land a good job or a nice place to live. Whatever drug charge you face, you are looking at penalties that could be permanent, no matter how long a sentence of incarceration is.
