Woman on Phone in Front of Officer: “I Have to Go, I’m Getting Arrested for DUI Again”

On Thursday, December 19, an Arizona woman was arrested in Cottonwood on charges including drunk driving. According to news outlets, a police officer came up to a vehicle parked on the sidewalk to find a woman behind the wheel, talking on the phone with an open container of beer on her lap. It was then said that the officer rapped on the window to get the woman’s attention, and she rolled down the window. But she kept talking on the phone. After the officer asked her to end her conversation, it was the reported that the 52-year-old then told the person over the phone, “I have to go, I’m getting arrested for DUI again.” When officer asked why the woman had her car on the sidewalk, she told him that she was waiting to pick her daughter up from youth group. The police officer reported that the woman had blood-shot eyes, and that she said she had finished six beers. When asked to perform a field sobriety test, however, she said that she “did not feel like it.” As she exited her car, the officer saw pills on her, pills that turned out to be acetaminophen and hydrocodone. Upon further investigation, it was found that the woman’s driver’s license had been revoked already. She was indeed arrested on a DUI charge again. Her charges include an aggravated DUI and a charge of having an open container. The penalties for any DUI conviction are serious, entailing a potential jail sentence, hefty fines, probation, and installing an ignition interlock device. Worse still would come a criminal record, one that could permanently tarnish your reputation. This criminal record could lead to more serious penalties if ever convicted of a DUI again. For an aggravated DUI, someone could face a minimum of four months in state prison, and as much as 3.75 years behind bars. A conviction could mean losing your car, being fined thousands of dollars, up to a decade of probation, a revoked driver’s license, and an ignition interlock device for a decade. If you or someone you know faces any DUI charges, it is imperative that you know how to handle the situation well. You also need to be fully aware of your rights, such as your right to remain silent, and how to use those rights.
