Last August, a 16 year old girl was raped in West Virginia by who the prosecution believes to be two football players from Steubenville High School, 16 and 17 year olds. They are both being charged with rape, and one boy is also being charged for possession of a nude photo of the victim. Two victims have come forward for the trial in order to recount the happenings of the night. One girl who was friends with the victim said that she warned her not to leave with the athletes from the school. The girl then apparently picked up her friend the following morning and the victim began crying and said she couldn’t remember a thing.
A week later is when the story of what happened that night began to make sense for the young victim. She received a picture text message on her cell phone of her naked, taken by the friend who was with her. Another student came forward from the high school that witnessed the girl at the nights party and claimed that she was very much under the influence and was unable to walk properly. According to the two witnesses recollection of the nights events, they saw the girl fall over at the party and the group of football players picked her up and carried her away.
This case is before a civil court and there is no jury, leaving the final decision in the hands of Judge Thomas Lipps. The charges against the teens are for delinquency, and when compared to a criminal charge it is the equivalent of an adult.
